Director of Education
Position Description
The Director of Education will work on the major educational initiatives of the New York Urban League – our Staten Island Youth program, the Whitney M Young Scholarship Program, the Historically Black College Fair, and an evolving Mentoring Program. The Director of Education will also help to develop, implement and help fund new program initiatives. The position will be based in Harlem, but may in time include a school in Brooklyn and traveling to the Staten Island youth based program. The Director of Education will report to the Deputy Director of Programs and be part of the Executive Cabinet.
Major Duties & Responsibilities:
· Working directly with Deputy Director of Programs and the CEO, the Director of Education will help develop and implement a new education department for the New York Urban League.
· Oversee implementation of the Whitney M Young Scholarship program to aspiring college students, and the creation of system to track lapsed scholars. In addition the Public Ally will work with the Associate Director to identify ways to creatively find people who have received Whitney M Young Scholarships in the past and re-connect them with the Urban League.
· The New York Urban League regularly works with a group of over one hundred 25-40 year old professional volunteers called the Young Professionals. The Director of Education will work with his or her staff to develop a signature mentoring program for junior high or high schoolers that will help feed scholarship applicants for the Whitney M Young Scholarship program.
· The New York Urban League has also partnered with Children’s Aid Society to provide one of the nation’s largest Historically Black College Fairs every November. The Director of Education will directly liaison with the HBCU Committee.
· The Director of Education will have direct oversight of the Staten Island Youth Leadership program,
· Other duties as assigned.
Education, Skills & Experience:
* Five years experience working in a non-profit organization on education issues.
* Commitment to the organization’s mission
* Strong analytic, problem solving, verbal and written communications skills
* Ability to work with staff in various disciplines and at all organizational levels
* Ability to multi-task in fast paced dynamic environment.
* Experience in proposal development.
* Strong Computer skills.
* Strong existing networks in the community, school-based or foundation setting.
